Brief History<\/h2>\n\t \n\t \t

The Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue (This is the present name from 1977) was conceived in 1951 and established in 1953 by the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka as a Study Centre for religion and society for the benefit of lay and clergy interested in building good inter-faith relations, ecumenism and study of socio-political issues under the Directorship of Rev. Basil Jackson an eminent British Missionary. Subsequently the National Christian Council was involved in the work of the Institute for few years. But the center programs were mainly organized by the Director of EISD.\n\n\n\nDuring the sixties Christian-Buddhist dialogue and social analysis from a theological perspective was given a very prominent place in the programs of the Institute. This necessitated a broad-based ecumenical vision and involvements of Catholics, Protestants and other religious and secular groups. In order to satisfy this need the Institute was given autonomy by the Methodist Church in the year 1977. This center has been involved in successfully organizing a number of dialogues, conferences, meetings and seminars. During the period of 70\u2019s and 80\u2019s the center was recognized one of the most active of all similar study centers world-wide. Currently the Institute is managed by an independent Board of Management of 13 members drawn from different denominational backgrounds on the basis of their skills and interest in the objectives of the Institute.\n\n\n\nThe day to day affairs are managed by the Director and the Office staff (Currently there are 4 fulltime Office Staff). Also some of volunteers collaborate with the work of the Institute.\n\n\n\nThe Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue is Registered as a Society under the Registrar of Societies.
